though rachel has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer for over a month, she didn’t realize that she hadn’t fully accepted it yet. about two
weeks after her first chemo treatment, it hit her like a big bag of bricks. she had noticed a lot of hair on her pillow each morning, but it wasn’t until
clumps came out in her hand in the shower. that was a really emotional day for her. on top of that, the drug side effects were in full force with every
bone in her body screaming in pain. she had texted me one morning saying she didn’t even make it up the steps to go to bed. i couldn’t imagine. 🙁
since the beginning her motto has been “i’m going to kick cancer’s ass!” so she decided before it could get her down, she was going to control IT.
she chose to shave her head and make it a party instead of sobbing as the clumps washed down the drain day after day. a handful of people
came over last friday, some even brought gifts! thanks to amy’s friend who embroidered scarves for rachel! how awesome?!
y’all know i got a closet full of fun stuff to put on your head. we played dress up. 🙂 and thanks to american cancer society and amy wilson
for sending rachel some scarves for her as well! those are the fabric squares in the front.
it was pretty funny watching those down wind get a face full of hair. 🙂
i took a few swipes out of her neighbor evan’s hair to see how low the 3 guard would be. his momma insisted i even it out. lol.
then maggie (she coached rach with me) made a mohawk!
why wouldn’t we spray paint it?
unintentionally matched her shirt perfectly. pretty sweet.
and while we were at it… 🙂 (don’t worry, i didn’t expect to win ‘mother of the year’ award anyway)
unfortunately rachel’s mom didn’t think the catholic hs she attends would appreciate the mohawk…soooo i had to cut it off. :-/ booooo.
still as beautiful as ever! she’s lucky she has a cute little head, she wears it well. don’t you think?
while rach was showering we all wrote sweet little messages for her. 🙂
they wanted jump again. haha. lucky adam showed up and could operate the camera for me.
reason #8000 why i love rachel.
then we all got in on the action. 🙂
a kind of, but not so much, improved (day early) bday celebration for me. apparently some of the girls don’t like icing haha. thanks for the cake amy!!
as many of you have requested, i will continue to let you peek into rachel’s journey as she dominates cancer. shes back in the hospital this weekend for her
second round of chemo. this thursday is the Light the Night Leukemia and Lymphoma walk. the past week ive spent most of my time organizing and
preparing for it. adam designed a shirt and we sold it to raise money to help with medical bills. we sold A LOT. like triple what i thought we would.
i’m SO excited. thank you SO MUCH to everyone who is supporting them!! more on that later! i hope you all are well and not skipping any opportunity
to love on your children! thinking of you rachel! love you! heart, melanie
